Tanks did/can carry very different shells. Obviously exploding inside a tank fucks that tank right up, but they weren't quite as good at getting through armor.īut I don't know a lot about American or Russian shells, and even what I think I know should be taken with a grain of salt, I'm no expert.ĭepends on the round. German tanks most often tended to use armor piercing high explosive, which would penetrate into the tank and explode after a set distance inside. If I'm not mistaken, the British tended to use solid shot, basically a giant bullet, that would just smash a hole in whatever it hit and blast the inside of a tank with a molten hot blast of fragments on the way through. Among the various explosive rounds, however, there was still a fuse that had to be triggered for the shell to explode, and thus glancing blows wouldn't necessarily set it off. ![]() It largely depended on the nationality, they weren't uniform across all nations, and even internally nations would have multiple types of rounds.
